The streets were not empty – here and there small dark children played catch-the-cat, or kick-can. Games she knew only too well from her own recent childhood. Louise scanned the faces, hoping bizarrely that one of them would turn out to be Chris or Edward. The urchins with their sharp hungry faces reminded her the most of Chris, but not one met scrutiny.
There was, however, something most odd about the children of Chankly Bore. Some of them walked hunch-backed, so close to running on all fours that they looked almost like animals. Others seemed too tall, too thin, and their faces were filled with a dreamy expression; lost wide eyes and cruel mouths.
