Fantasy books for reluctant readers.

A friend of mine has an eleven year-old daughter, who is very much a reluctant reader.

She’s finally picked up Harry Potter and appears to be enjoying it, so I’m asking if anyone can think of other fantasy books that might appeal.

I’d love to hear your suggestions.

In other news, a certain Hannah on a certain site is agented by a certain v cool agent. I’m so happy for you – your book is fantastic and I cannot wait to see it in print. (I swear, my bookshelves are eventually going to be groaning under the weight of Muser’s books.)

  • My daughter absolutely loved the Percy Jackson series, and the Charlie Bone series (as did I, actually). Oooh, and there is also the Horatio Lyles (but I have been struggling to get into it)

  • The Fablehaven books by Brandon Mull! This is a fantasy series written for children. It is about a secret preserve that protects magical creatures and artifacts and the 2 grandchildren of the caretaker have alot of adventures there. There are 3 in print with atleast 2 more being written.

  • Hi,

I don’t write fantasy, but I do write for reluctant readers.

I grew up as a reluctant reader. Now I write action-adventures & mysteries, especially for tween boys, that girls and boys hate to put down. My web site is at http://www.maxbooks.9k.com and my Books for Boys blog is at http://booksandboys.blogspot.com I also have a short story in a new book called LAY UPS and LONG SHOTS, published by Darby Creek Publishing. I’m also featured in an article in the 2009 edition of Children’s Writer Guide.

My other books are all ranked by Accelerated Reader

  • I was always a fan of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede. (#1 is Dealing with Dragons) Princess Cimorene runs away to work for a dragon so she doesn’t have to marry the brave prince, who keeps being annoying and trying to come rescue her. There’s also witch with too many cats and some evil wizards to deal with, and the dragons sneeze whenever they smell magic. The books are very silly, but then so am I.
